We are partnered with C.C. Blaney Elementary School in Hollywood. For the 2013-2014 school year, we are feeding 60 students every weekend. A team of volunteers goes into the school to pack the backpacks for the children to take food home every Friday.
This ministry provides the opportunity to directly impact the lives of impoverished elementary school children by providing them with food on the weekends so they have a better chance of educational success. Long term, childhood hunger can lead to a weaker immune system, increased hospitalization rates, and impaired neural development, leading to lower IQs and lower academic achievement. Short term, unmet nutritional needs make it very difficult for children to learn, pay attention in class and behave properly to retain knowledge.
**Blessings in a Backpack donates the backpacks for the program, so 100% of the money raised by the local program coordinator goes directly to food purchased for the backpacks.
**Every Friday, students receive their backpacks with food staples that require little to no preparation. They return with their backpacks on Monday ready to learn. For just $2.10, a child can be fed on the weekend. This amounts to $80 for an entire school year. Backpack food includes easy-to-prepare, shelf-stable food items, like granola bars, juice boxes, instant macaroni and oatmeal.
